Anointing of the Sick
The tradition of healing and pastoral care.
Anointing of the Sick
At Saint Ann’s, the Anointing of the Sick is a sacred rite rooted in the Church’s tradition of healing and pastoral care. This sacramental act uses consecrated oil as an outward and visible sign of God's active and loving presence in times of physical, emotional, or spiritual need.
Anointing with oil is accompanied by prayers for healing and the laying on of hands, following the rite for Ministration to the Sick found in the Book of Common Prayer. This rite affirms God's grace and the support of the Christian community during times of illness or distress. The oil used may be scented, with different fragrances symbolizing the particular purpose of the anointing, whether for healing, initiation, or ordination.
While the Anointing of the Sick is most commonly associated with healing, it is part of a broader sacramental tradition that includes baptism and ordination.
